The aim of this 2 day course is to give teachers and carers confidence in their ability to lead, or accompany, groups of young people with a range of needs and abilities on a residential outdoor education course at Ghyll Head.  In particular, to look at how to meet the needs of those with physical disabilities.

The programme for the weekend will include discussions on:

  • How to set up a residential
  • Advice on selection of pupils
  • Bungalow facilities
  • Staffing issues
  • Personal care and medical considerations
Together with
  • PRACTICAL experience of the venues and outdoor activities.
  • An opportunity to look at new technical equipment available

 Example Course programme

Friday7pm Buffet tea 8pm Presentations on the above agenda.

Saturday A practical day visiting venues and an option to ‘have a go’ at the activities.

Sunday Option to visit more venues and participate in the activities .

INSET for Teachers - Using ITC in the Outdoors

For teachers looking at practical curriculum links in the outdoor environment.  Using ICT in the Outdoors. Looks at the use of various technologies and there application within a Ghyll Head outdoor course.

The weekend will be an introduction to the use of Data loggers, GPS, digital photography,filming & video editing, Zip wire speed test and the digital microscopes.

This course is very much a hands on outdoor course and includes use of the Lake, Zip wire and a local walk so bring your wet weather gear.

Starts Friday evening, finishes Sunday afternoon.

 

NQT INset

An opportunity for NQT’s to enjoy a weekend at Manchester’s outdoor centre in the Lake District.  The aim of the course is to give people experience of a range of outdoor activities and make them familiar with the benefits that  Outdoor Education, and Ghyll Head in particular, can offer for Manchester pupils. Activities on offer during the weekend depend on the weather, but are most likely to include canoeing, caving, gill scrambling, mountain walking, abseiling, and a zipwire in Centre Grounds.   Twelve places are available.
