We have just finished the second Science & Storytelling camp at Ghyll Head. Twenty four Year 9 students from a number of different high schools took part in a week that saw them trained in the use of digital cameras, PDA's, video editing suites and data-loggers some of which were used to record and present poems of their own creation. The inspiration for the poems came from a visit to Wordsworth's house at Dove Cottage, a walk up one of the local mountains Loughrigg as well as a paddle across Windermere by open canoe. They also devised and undertook a number of scientific observations including a local bird count, heart rate monitoring on the ropes course, testing the sound absorbing properties of local vegetation and a mapping excercise of the grounds. The experiments were then presented in video format. The course was organised by Les Jones from MEP who we have learned is retiring this summer, Les as well as being an inspirational educator has been a strong supporter of Ghyll Head and we wish him well in the future. We would also like to thank the other specialist staff members brought in to help they were Andrew Wild (MEP), Donna Varney (MEP), ALison Glover(MEP), Rachel Eppy (MEP) and also Annie and Eve from the Field Studies Council. This is the second year we have run this camp, thanks to the financial and technical backing of the City Learning Centres and Andrew Wild from MEP the new ICT facilities at the centre worked expectionally well. We are hoping in the future to offer more of this type of course that will be run with smaller numbers from the Bungalow. The week was a great example of Ghyll Head using its Outdoor and ICT facilities working together with others to enhance the curriculum for Manchester's youngsters. |
