Hazards

Fog, Snow Lake District National Park Authority FELLTOP CONDITIONS REPORT from Fairfield at 100pm on Thursday 4th December 2008 Paths are covered by soft snow at all levels, although a thaw was setting in below 450m. The snow depth increases with height to reach 90cm in drifts especially on eastern facing aspects. Much of this accumulation is fresh snow on windslab; it is very loosely bonded to the surface and may potentially slide away. Similarly, cornices have formed on eastern facing aspects and are also very unstable. Full winter clothing is strongly recommended for anyone venturing out on the fells together with an ice axe or poles for stability through the deep snow. Crampons should also be carried by those attempting steeper routes, or in case the snow re-freezes, which it is forecasted to do, especially at higher altitudes. The temperature on the summit of Fairfield today (at 873m, rather than Helvellyn's 950m) was zero degrees and the windchill -7 degrees.
